Reading Makes Me Smarter

Updated: Aug 1

Hey everyone! It a slow time at work right now so I'm furthering my knowledge and doing things I've been putting off. Today I read a book that's been on my shelf that I've been avoiding for over a year.

Yellow book cover with black writing. Title: Show Your Work! 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered by Austin Kleon
Show Your Work by Austin Kleon

Have you read it? It was recommended to me by one of my extremely knowledgeable professors when I was making my portfolio. It's a short read, maybe an hour or two. Well worth your time! It gives all sorts of tips on how to put your work (and yourself) out there. It was a good reminder for my introvert self and gave me some new (to me) ideas.

One of the things that stood out to me, that I haven't been doing, is posting about what I'm working on regularly. It talks about how the final product doesn't need to be perfect. People like to see though processes, learn what I'm learning, and get a glimpse of what I'm creating. It really hit home for me. Much of what I'm doing right now isn't ever going to be my project start to finish. I create a small piece and then pass it on. Or I get a piece that's already started and move it to the next level.

It suggested a blog. If you've known me for a while, you know I like to blog when I have a topic I'm passionate about. What better to blog about than my work?!? I love design. I love creating. This should be something that comes naturally for me.

Here's to my first blog post on my website about how reading makes me smarter and pushes me to the next thing! I recommend this book if you are ready to put yourself out there and I'm looking forward to sharing more about what I've been working on.
